Chili Fries En Masse
The picture does not do the plate justice. This "appetizer" at Heroes Bar & Grill in Fullerton, CA easily approaches 4 lbs. Most servers try to convince you order the half-size. At $11.95, it's a bargain for sensible diners who decide to share their food.
It's not an official eating challenge. Not yet, at least.
Two Sundays ago, Pablo Martinez and I converged upon Heroes to knock out their 6-pancake challenge in short order. We ended up splitting the leftovers of this platter after our challenges. Video coming shortly.

7+ lb Bundle of Joy
It looks like a cake. That is, if you're familiar with cakes stuffed with rice and meat and wrapped in seaweed. The oversized musubi pictured above is known as the Stan-Musubi, named after the owner of Ola's Hawaiian BBQ in Fullerton.
The disclaimer I signed before taking the challenge in November 2011 listed the big musubi at over 7 lbs. It's got a ton of rice, which I usually don't handle well. Inside the rice you'll find chicken and beef. You get 35 minutes to eat your way to a free meal.
A group of us went together (names withheld to protect the guilty). It took the kitchen awhile to prepare all the food, but it was honestly delicious. This is a challenge that I'd do over if I could. Free food rocks, but awesome food is a step above.
From musubis, the night led us to a very non-food based situation complete with laughter and arm wrestling.
It's not clear to me how to follow up a story like arm wrestling. At least no one was seriously hurt.. a classmate from high school refused to arm wrestle me because of all the horror stories he heard associated with the activity.
If you liked that video, watch out! Competitive Eaters Gone Wild Part II is in development.

Froyo and the Freak Attack a Six Stack
Mmmmm.... pancakes! A couple months ago, Aaron Ybarra and I met up for a pancake challenge in downtown Fullerton. Heroes Bar & Grill is known better for its nightlife, but on Sunday mornings they tempt us mass consumers with an offer for free breakfast.
That's a stack of six large pancakes. Of course, everything Heroes serves is large. Their nachos or chili cheese fries could easily pass off as challenges. All their beverages come to the table in huge glass mugs. The pancakes are just following a set reputation for grandiosity.
The challenge is simple. Eat all six pancakes, a cup of fruit, and two strips of bacon (I subbed more fruit) in one sitting and your $12 meal is free. There's no time limit. We were confident that we'd finish, and it turns out that didn't need more than 20 minutes when it was all said and done.
Of course, Aaron and I aren't strangers. We've done plenty of challenges together. We clashed in at least two contests. So for this challenge, we decided to do something special and create a "how to" video regarding approaching a challenge like this one.
The video process is a bit frustrating. You don't always remember that you're on camera while eating. There's moments where I look messy. We stopped to give little hints, and there is some humor going back and forth between "Froyo" and the "Freak." Hopefully you like the finished product.
We left the place feeling not quite stuffed, but fluffy. That's pancakes for you.
